Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ont., set the National Hockey League record for most assists in a single Stanley Cup playoff season on Saturday. He accomplished the feat in the Oilers’ 8-1 victory over the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, giving the Oilers a 7-1 lead at the time. McDavid now has 32 assists in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs, one more than Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ont., who had 31 assists with the Oilers in the 1988 Stanley Cup playoffs.
McDavid had a goal and three assists for four points. His record-breaking assist came with five minutes, 49 seconds left in the third period. McDavid set up Dylan Holloway of Calgary, Alberta. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Corey Perry of New Liskeard, Ontario, had the other assist. Perry won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouverand that 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Two other Canadians scored multiple points for the Oilers. Holloway scored two goals and an assist for three points, and Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario, had two assists. Four other Canadians scored points for the Oilers. They were Adam Henrique of Brantford, Ryan McLeod of Mississauga, Ontario, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia, and defenseman Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario.
With this victory, the Oilers won their first game in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. However, they are still three games to one behind the Panthers in the best-of-seven series. Game five will take place on Tuesday in Sunrise, Florida.
