Martin Jones of North Vancouver, British Columbia, recorded his 29th career shutout in the National Hockey League on Saturday. He achieved this feat in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario.
This was Jones’ first shutout with the Maple Leafs. Eighteen were with the San Jose Sharks, seven with the Los Angeles Kings and three with the Seattle Kraken.
Jones made 11 saves in the first period, 18 in the second period and nine saves in the third period for a total of 38 saves. Canadian Olympian Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Marcus Petersson and Valtteri Puustinen led the Penguins with five shots each. Crosby won the gold medal for Canada Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and that 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Four native Canadians played a multi-point game for the Maple Leafs. Max Domi of Winnipeg, Manitoba had a goal and two assists for three points, Tyler Bertuzzi of Sudbury, Ontario had three assists, Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario had a goal and an assist for two points and William Nylander of Calgary, Alberta had one Goal and an assist for two points. Three more Canadians scored for the Maple Leafs. They were Noah Gregor from Beaumont, Alberta, Bobby McMann from Wainwright, Alberta with his first ever NHL goal and Canadian Olympic gold medalist John Tavares from Mississauga, Ontario. Tavares won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
As of the 2023-24 season, Jones has a record of three wins and zero losses. He has a goals-against average of 1.85 and a save percentage of .949.
The Maple Leafs are currently in second place in the Atlantic Division. They have a record of 16 wins, six regulation losses and six overtime losses, which translates to 38 points.
