Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, recorded her first career Professional Women’s Hockey League hat trick on Wednesday. She achieved this feat in Montreal’s 5-2 win over New York at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Poulin tied the game at 8:14 of the first period against Canadian Olympic gold medalist Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ont. Poulin then gave Montreal a 4-2 lead at 6:03 of the third period through Maureen Murphy and Tereza Vanisova. Then, with one minute and seven seconds left in the game, Poulin tied the score with an unassisted empty net marker.
In total, three Canadians scored a goal for Montreal. The other two were Catherine Dubois of Quebec City, Quebec, and Kennedy Marchment of Courtice, Ontario.
Of the three PWHL games Poulin has played so far, she has scored three goals and one assist for four points. Poulin is a +4 with two penalty minutes, 40 faceoff wins and nine shots on goal.
Poulin and Ambrose won a gold medal for Canada in women’s hockey 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Poulin also won a gold medal in women’s hockey for Canada Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and that 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
With the win, Montreal improved to a record of two wins and one loss, or five points. They also defeated Ottawa 3-2 in overtime on Jan. 2, thanks to a game-winning goal from Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Montreal next plays Boston on Saturday.
