Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marc-Andre Fleury of Sorel, Quebec, missed the regular season for the 74th time in his National Hockey League career. He did so on Monday in the Wild’s 5-0 win over the New York Islanders at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In total, Fleury made 21 saves. He made ten saves in the first period, three in the second period and eight saves in the third period. Pierre Engvall and Brock Nelson led the Islanders with three shots each.
For Fleury, Monday was a memorable shutout for a different reason. With the win, Fleury now has 552 wins and moves into second place on the NHL’s all-time wins list behind Patrick Roy of Quebec City, Quebec. Only Martin Brodeur from Montreal, Quebec has more with 691.
On the Wild’s offense Monday, Minnesota scored goals from Connor Dewar of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba and Marcus Foligno of Sudbury, Ontario. Foligno had a multi-point game as he recorded a goal and an assist for two points.
Fleury, who won a gold medal for Canada Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, has 44 career shutouts with the Pittsburgh Penguins, 23 shutouts with the Vegas Golden Knights, four shutouts with the Chicago Blackhawks and three with the Wild. This season he has a record of eight wins, nine regulation losses and three overtime losses. Fleury also has a shutout record with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage. With the win, the Wild improved to a record of 18 wins, 20 regulation losses and five overtime losses, for 41 points.
