The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New York Islanders 7-0 and it was a memorable game for two Canadians. Kris Letang of Montreal, Quebec, set the National Hockey League record for most assists by a defenseman in a game (five) and tied the Penguins’ record for most assists in a game (six). Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry of Surrey, British Columbia, made 22 saves for the shutout, his fourth of the NHL-leading season.
Of the Penguins’ five goals, on which Letang had an assist in the second period, Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin each scored two goals. Letang also assisted Radim Zohorna for a second-period goal and Valtteri Puustinen for a third-period goal, his first in his NHL career. The other Penguins to have six assists in a game are Mario Lemieux of Montreal, Quebec (has accomplished the feat three times), Ron Stackhouse of Haliburton, Ontario, and Greg Malone of Fredericton, New Brunswick.
In total, Jarry has now made 22 saves. He made four saves in the first period, seven in the second period and 11 saves in the third period.
In the 2023-24 season, Letting recorded three goals and 20 assists for 23 points in 33 games. Jarry has a record of 10 wins, 11 regulation losses and two overtime losses, with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.
