The Canadian Women’s Curling Championship heads to Kamloops next year.
The 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women’s Curling Championship will take place Feb. 17-26 at the Sandman Center, according to an announcement made today, Jan.6, by Curling Canada.
“Hosting the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is a huge opportunity for a host city to promote itself and generate economic activity for local businesses, and that’s why it’s such a competitive process for candidate cities,” Katherine Henderson, CEO of Curling Canada, said in a press release.
“Kamloops came up with an offer that was superb in every way; the tournament capital of Canada knows how to host major events, as we’ve seen in the past, and I know it’s going to be an amazing Scotties in 2024.
The championship will be the 42nd edition of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. While this will be the first time the Scotties have been played in Kamloops, it will not be the first major curling event in the city.
Kamloops hosted the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier, won by Alberta team Kevin Koe. It also hosted the Tim Hortons Brier in 1996, with Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton leading the way, according to Curling Canada.
Kamloops also hosted the men’s and women’s world curling championships in 1998, with Canadian team Wayne Middaugh taking gold in the men and Swedish team Elisabet Gustaffson taking gold in the women.
“Kamloops has a rich tradition of curling events, and we know this one will be no exception,” City of Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian said in the statement. “We are delighted to have once again the opportunity to present our city and to have been selected to host this prestigious championship. ”
By hosting the 2023 Scotties, Kamloops will be the fifth city to host the four major events of the Season of Champions: the Tim Hortons Brier, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Men’s World Championship and the Women’s World Championship. The others are Winnipeg, Brandon, Man., Saint John, NB and Lethbridge, Alberta.
This will be the ninth time the Canadian Women’s Curling Championship has been held in British Columbia.
The 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will represent Canada at the 2023 World Women’s Curling Championship and the winning team will also play in the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts as Team Canada.
The first entry for the 2023 Scotties will be decided on February 6 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with the winner of the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts being decided that day and playing with Team Canada in Kamloops.
Full ticket packages for the event are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks. Customers can register Curling Canada’s electronic newsletter to receive presale information.
Volunteer opportunities will also be available later this year. Go in line to sign up for updates on volunteering for the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
TSN / RDS2, Curling Canada’s official Season of Champions broadcast partner, will broadcast all the action from Kamloops.
