Several big Canadian names compete at the Golden Globes tonight as the film and television awards show attempts a comeback after a year’s hiatus.

Notable names include James Cameron, who is up for Best Director for his sci-fi epic Avatar: The Way of Water, which is also nominated for Best Drama Film.

Also in the running is Toronto filmmaker Sarah Polley, who is nominated for Best Screenplay for her female-directed drama, Women Talking. The film also received an award for best film score.

Competing for Best Animated Feature is Canadian animator Domee Shi’s Toronto-based coming-of-age adventure Turning Red.

In terms of performance, Canadian-American actor Brendan Fraser is nominated for Best Actor for his starring role in Darren Aronofsky’s film The Whale, while Seth Rogen from Vancouver is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the limited series Pam & Tommy.

Meanwhile, Martin Short is up for the role of the eccentric theater director in Only Murders in the Building for Best Actor in a TV Comedy Series.

NBC did not broadcast the Golden Globes last year after the Los Angeles Times exposed alleged ethical violations at the show’s organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The report also noted that there were no black members in the group.

Now the group says it has expanded and diversified its membership and voting processes, and introduced a new strict code of conduct. Celebrities are expected and comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the show, which will air on NBC and Citytv in Canada.
