Jabeur snatches Sakkari Rome semis with classic comeback

by Horace Rogers

Rome, May 13 (EFE).- The Tunisian Ons Jabeur managed the difficult task of overcoming a match that the Greek Maria Sakkari had in her hands (1-6, 7-5 and 6-1) and went to semi-final of the WTA 1000 in Rome, in which he is already waiting for a rival.

Sakarri had the semis a game away but Madrid Open champion Jabeur didn’t give up and did the trick after being outplayed in the first set and much of the second .

Helena crushed the Tunisian in the first set. Sakkari roughly broke the first serve of Jabeur, who struggled to enter the match, and led 3-0 in the blink of an eye. He held on to his serve and the lead, only to condemn by breaking another serve from his opponent and put a more than convincing 6-1 on the scoreboard at Foro Italico’s ‘Grand Stand Arena’.

The world number 4 crushed the number 7. And the trend continued in the second set. Sakkari, very confident and solid on the return, broke Jabeur’s first two serves and got the set back on track with another 3-0 lead.

But the Greek gave up her next serve and Jabeur saw a halo of light on the return. He kept believing it and step by step he sank Sakkari, smaller and smaller and more desperate. His good shots are gone.

With everything and with that, the Greek broke Jabeur for the third time and made him serve with 5-2 in favor. Everyone saw Sakkari in the semi-finals, everyone except Jabeur, who did not give up and recovered his serve and signed four games in a row to lead the match to a decisive third round.

The dynamic after the second set was antagonistic. Jabeur left entrusted to the third; Sakkari, head down, depressed. And that was a reflection of the third set, in which Jabeur gave up his rival 6-1 in the first set to seal his semi-final pass with, presumably, the return of the tournament.

In the semi-finals, the Tunisian awaits a rival, who will come out of the clash between the Swiss Jil Belen Teichmann and the Russian Daria Kasatkina.
