Iuel remembers the Olympic disappointment every day – NRK Sport – Sports news, results and broadcast schedule

– It’s always on the retina, said Amalie Iuel about the Olympics.

There she qualified for the semi-finals in the 400-meter hurdles, but first tripped during the warm-up, then got off to a good start, but was able to run anyway. The 27-year-old finished last and the dream of a final was shattered.

– I was really disappointed. It was definitely not the way I had hoped the Olympics would play out for me. We had been training for that for the last five years and prepared as best we could, and when it ends in a false start and a really bad race … ‘we want to do, now says the hurdler a little more than a month later.

Yet she remembers the bad feeling she had. Iuel pulls out her cell phone to view the background image she uploaded.

– Exactly when I realized what I had done. So that I can look at it and remind myself that I don’t want to have those feelings anymore. I don’t want to go through this again, she said.

– Does the photo motivate you or abandon you?

– At the beginning it was a bit like “ah …”, because I have the impression of never having moved away from it. There were always questions about it. But when I see it now, it’s different. I’m looking at this a bit before practice and I think “now I’m going to put the shock on and make sure it doesn’t happen again”.

Training partner Karsten Warholm believes motivational taking can work. When he lost by two hundredths to Kyron McMaster in the 2018 Diamond League final, he had the photo of the race goal on his mobile for a long time.

– I have great faith in this tactic. There is something special about remembering your mistakes every morning. I think there’s something in there, that you see that I shouldn’t have that feeling any more, sort of, said Warholm.

Never happened before

Iuel thought a lot about the day when most things went wrong. The dream was a Norwegian record, but she finds it difficult to predict what would have happened if she hadn’t made this start. She didn’t expect it to start raining either.

– It was both disappointing and surprising to me. I have never started or done anything like this in a 400 yards. You hardly see it happening. I’m kind of the first to say “oh my god how could that happen” when someone jumps on a 400 because you don’t get any competitive advantage. To be honest, I didn’t see it coming, says Iuel.

On Thursday, she is back on the starting line, as she will run 400 meters flat before the Diamond League final in Zurich. She will also run this distance at the national championships on Friday and at a competition in Berlin on Sunday.

– I really want to try. It’s always fun with “new” exercises, and it’s very similar to the 400-meter hurdles, says Iuel.
