India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar takes on Canadian NSA and how

by Edwin Robertson

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar reacted sharply to comments by Canada’s National Security Advisor (NSA) accusing India of interfering in Canada’s affairs.

“The phrase that came to mind was ‘Ulta chor kotwal ko daante (the pot calls the cauldron black)’,” Jaishankar said, adding that if anyone was to complain, it would be India.

Canada’s NSA Jody Thomas has placed the world’s largest democracy, India, in the league of authoritative nations such as China, Russia and Iran.

“When I talk about foreign interference and economic security, I am now talking about a range of state actors and non-state proxies. That includes Russia, Iran and India,” the Canadian NSA said.

“Nonetheless, China is the actor that gets the most talked about on these issues, and that comes as no surprise to anyone,” Thomas said.

She made the remark at a conference hosted by Canada’s Global Affairs Institute.

Such a remark from Canada was not new. The country’s New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, has long accused India of meddling in Canadian affairs.

Singh, known for his pro-Khalistan rhetoric, has even advised the Canadian government to downgrade diplomatic ties with India over “human rights concerns”.

In 2020, Justin Trudeau supported the peasant protest in India and assured Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protests.

The Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi then accused the Trudeau government of interfering in India’s internal affairs with its statements on the peasant protest.
