India conveys its concerns to the US over the activities of pro-Khalistani elements in Canada

Days after Trudeau’s allegations, India temporarily suspended issuing visas to Canadian citizens and called on Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure equality.

“We have made our concerns very, very clear,” Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra said at a news conference. The American delegation to the ‘2+2’ ministerial dialogue talks was led by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, while Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh led the Indian side. “We have fundamental security concerns and I am sure all of you are aware of the recently surfaced video of such a person,” Kwatra said, adding that the US side was sympathetic to New Delhi’s concerns. India-Canada relations came under severe strain after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations in September over the June killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the Canadian city of Surrey.

Days after Trudeau’s allegations, India temporarily suspended issuing visas to Canadian citizens and called on Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure equality. Canada has already withdrawn 41 diplomats and their family members from India. India has already resumed some visa services.
