Summary: Diplomatic dispute between India and Canada – a brief summary
India-Canada News LIVE Updates: The unprecedented tensions flared on Monday after Trudeau said Ottawa was investigating “credible allegations” about the possible involvement of Indian government agents in the June murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government denied any connection to the alleged murder.
Canadian officials have so far refused to say why they believe India could be linked to Nijjar’s murder.
The two countries, whose relations have been strained in recent years over the Sikh separatist issue, have since alternately announced expulsions of senior diplomats and issued mutual travel warnings.
Bagchi said India was “ready to look at concrete information. We have communicated this to the Canadian side and made it clear to them… but so far we have not received any such specific information.”
Canada has discussed the issue with key allies such as the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand, with Washington, London and Canberra expressing concern.
Asked whether any of these countries, with which India also has close ties, had raised the issue with New Delhi, Bagchi said: “We have discussed with them and expressed our position on how we see these developments.”
