Ikea has recalled one of its chargers due to the risk of burns and electric shock caused by wear and tear.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Swedish multinational said it is urging all customers who own the Åskstorm 40W USB charger in dark gray to stop using the product and contact Ikea for a full refund .
According to Ikea, this particular charger’s power cord can become damaged or broken “after being wrapped around a charger or bent back and forth after extended periods of use.” As a result, the company says, “thermal burns and electric shocks” can occur.
“Safety is Ikea’s top priority and therefore the dark gray 40W Åskstorm USB charger is being recalled due to the risk of burns and electric shock due to wear and tear on the power cord,” the company said.

“Ikea apologizes for any inconvenience this recall may cause.”
The product can be identified by the model number ICPSW5-40-1, which can be found on the label on the back of the USB charger, the company said.
Ikea said the charger could be returned to any of its stores for a full refund. A receipt as proof of purchase is not required.

WHAT CANADIAN CONSUMERS NEED TO KNOW
In one Recall notificationHealth Canada said Ikea sold 10,258 units of the affected products in Canada from April 2020 to December 2023 and had no incidents or injuries recorded in Canada as of January 3.
The federal health agency said the company had received 17 reports worldwide that the power cord may have been damaged or broken through use. In some of these cases, consumers reported thermal burns and electric shocks.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and return it to Ikea for a refund,” Health Canada said.
