Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for several vehicle models and are urging drivers not to park near buildings because of the risk of the problem starting a fire.
Hyundai said the recall affects 326,942 vehicles in Canada and 1,642,551 vehicles in the United States
Hyundais recalled vehicles This includes certain 2010-15 models from Accent, Elantra, Tucson, Sante Fe and others.
According to the release, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in the vehicles could leak brake fluid and, over time, cause an electrical short circuit that could cause a fire while the car is parked or driving.
No injuries or deaths have been reported due to the issue, Hyundai said in an emailed statement to CTVNews.ca.
Kia too recalled several models including Optima, Forte, Soul, Sportage, Rio and others from 2010 to 2017 due to a short circuit in the brakes.
Kia confirmed that 276,225 vehicles in Canada are affected by the recall and the company is urging owners to park the affected vehicles outdoors.
Hyundai recommends that drivers park the recalled vehicles outside buildings due to the risk of a fire occurring until the recall is completed. Owners can continue driving, the company says.
Hyundai recommends that all affected drivers take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection and, if necessary, replacement. Hyundai will contact affected vehicle owners by mid-November.
