Hundreds of Canadian Muslim women protest for their protection

An alarming series of attacks targeting Canadian Muslim women.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, EDMONTON – Just days after two Muslim women were attacked in St. Albert, hundreds of people attend an anti-hate rally in Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton, Canada. Organizers called on Edmonton residents to come together and demand action to protect Muslim women.

St. Albert attack is the latest in a series of disturbing incidents. This included another attack on a woman wearing a headscarf in downtown Edmonton.

The attacks target Muslim women. City of the page Radio-Canada, Sunday (27/6), screams “Making our streets safe” sounded from the stage as the speaker addressed the crowd. People come from diverse backgrounds.

An activist, Ahmed Ali, told the crowd he hoped the action would help heal those who had been attacked. They should not come together to fight hate.

“It’s not good for my older sister who has to worry about walking outside and deciding what color of hijab to wear so that it doesn’t stand out,” Ali said.

Alberta National Council of Muslim Canada (NCCM) representative Amira Shousha said extra precautions and security are being taken to ensure the safety of attendees and participants at the rally. “It’s sad that we even need to have police and peacekeepers here to make sure that people who want to speak out against injustice are (protected),” Shousha said.

Shousha said the NCCM would like to see a committee formed to fight Islamophobia.
