Huawei’s CFO defense team have revealed documents that could change the course of the case.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The trial of the extradition case of Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou (49) has entered a decisive phase after more than 2.5 years. The lawsuit has placed the United States, China and Canada, the country where Meng was arrested, in a prolonged legal and political maelstrom.

After Meng’s arrest, former US President Donald Trump said he would “intervene” in the case if he deemed it necessary in the interests of US trade relations with China. This implies that the case is loaded with geopolitical and economic interests.

In addition, the US Department of Justice’s extradition request is considered a violation of customary international law. Because the case happened to Meng, who is not a US citizen. The case involves companies based in the UK and China (HSBC and Huawei) and concerns a business presentation that took place at a restaurant in Hong Kong.

Meng is the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei. Media reports extradition of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou or Sabrina Meng has entered the decisive phase after Meng’s defense team presented a series of documents that could provide new evidence and could change the course of the case.

A few months ago, the Huawei team gained access to the documents through a court in Hong Kong. The documents come in the form of emails, meeting minutes, internal communications between HSBC executives regarding this matter which were previously not made public.

The trial, postponed to July 9, 2021, before the Supreme Court of British Columbia is expected to decide whether to accept in whole, in part or to reject the documents presented as new evidence at the trial. According to Huawei, the document reveals new credible facts and undermines the indictment of the US side in the extradition effort against Meng.
