Hitachi Rail plans to hire around 1,000 new employees in Canada through its $2.5 billion acquisition of Thales’ Ground Transportation Systems.

The Japanese company said the deal, which closed on Friday, will increase its presence in Canada from around 200 employees currently, while also further expanding its presence in North America.

About 9,000 employees are moving from GTS, a provider of signaling, revenue collection, communications and surveillance systems.

Hitachi says its own key sites in Japan, Italy, the UK and the US will be complemented by GTS’s facilities, including in Canada, where its Metro Technology Centre is responsible for a communications system used by more than 100 subway lines worldwide.

The deal is said to strengthen the export potential of the Canadian business unit.

Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Hitachi Rail, says the acquisition will double the company’s technical capacity.
