SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) — Hanwha Ocean Co., a shipbuilding and defense unit of South Korea’s Hanwha Group, said Friday it has partnered with three Canadian technology companies to strengthen cooperation as part of its efforts to bid for Canada’s maritime procurement project.
During the Canadian Global Defence & Security Trade Show in Ottawa, Hanwha Ocean signed a cooperation agreement with CAE Inc. to collaborate in naval operations training, expanding the existing memorandum of understanding (MOU) reached at a Canadian defence forum last year, the Korean company said.
At the same time, Hanwha Ocean signed separate letters of intent with Curtiss-Wright Indal Technologies for cooperation in the field of submarine technologies.
These agreements are part of Hanwha Ocean’s recent efforts to strengthen its presence in Canada’s maritime defence sector as the Royal Canadian Navy looks to replace its aging fleet of four Victoria-class submarines with newer models from international sources.
“The signing of this team agreement and letters of intent will be an important step for Hanwha Ocean in expanding our technology in the Canadian submarine business and our cooperation network with local Canadian companies,” said Lee Yong-wook, Vice President of Hanwha Ocean’s Special Vessel Business Unit.
