Government of Canada says it has enough doses to immunize entire population – 07/28/2021

Toronto, Canada, July 27 (EFE) .- The Government of Canada said on Tuesday it had reached, two months ahead of schedule, the 66 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine needed to fully immunize all eligible people.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the achievement at a press conference, adding that only 0.5% of new coronavirus cases on Canadian soil have been reported in people who have been vaccinated. “There are no more excuses for not getting vaccinated,” the prime minister said.

According to the latest figures, Canada administered 48.2 million doses of vaccine, including 26.8 million first doses and 21.4 million second.

Currently, 80.2% of the Canadian population over 12 years of age have been inoculated at least once, while 64% have received both injections.

Canada has approved vaccines from four different laboratories for people over 12 years of age: Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.

“The best way to end this pandemic is for everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The milestone announced today is a clear sign that we are on the verge of achieving this goal, ”said Troudeau.

On the other hand, he acknowledged that new variants of the coronavirus, such as the delta, could lead to an increase in cases, which is happening in other countries. This could cause problems in the health system, with the saturation of hospital intensive care units.

Several provinces across the country have announced initiatives, such as cash lotteries, to encourage vaccination among groups still reluctant to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Canada said last week it would reopen its land borders from August 9 to fully vaccinated Americans and on September 7 it would extend the measure to travelers from the rest of the world who have completed the vaccination schedule for at least 14 days. before their arrival. .. in the country.

Land borders with the United States have been closed since March 2020 for all non-essential travel, and air arrivals of citizens and permanent residents have been restricted to control the pandemic.
