JAKARTA – So far, some Indonesians have only seen united states of america (USA) and Europe as destinations better education abroad . Although in fact education in Canada , a country in North America, is also very promising.

The statement was made by the Consulate General of Indonesia in Toronto, Canada, Leonard F Hutabarat. According to him, the American government has opened wide the tap for Indonesians to study in their country. Obviously they spend a lot scholarship for foreigners, including Indonesia.

On the other hand, Canada is not very generous in offering scholarships to foreign students. They are very selective in determining which students can pass to study in their country.

“Canada will not be generous by offering scholarships. They are very selective. Unlike the United States, which offers many scholarships, while it is hunted by the Indonesian people. However, I think education in Canada is very good for the Indonesian people, ”Leonard told SINDOnews, Monday (3/22/2021).

Leonard said campuses in Canada are able to offer more value to Indonesian students studying there. In addition, the support of companies is also very strong when they are ready to become users for the graduate students of these campuses.

“An example is Siemens Canada, which provides tools at one of the campuses and provides training for technological transformation. Indirectly, HR is already familiar with this tool, and it will be useful HR for them, ”said Leonard.

With this support, these campuses will develop and support companies can also become places for student internships. Indeed, they no longer need to train human resources from scratch because they have been equipped since they were students.

This is what makes campuses in Canada a plus and a weight. In fact, some campuses are able to enter the top 50 of the best university rankings in the world among the best campuses in the United States and Europe. For example, the University of Toronto is ranked 25th and the University of British Columbia, Ontario, is ranked 45th. It is proof that campuses in Canada deserve to be educational destinations for the global community.

According to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) 2019, the number of international students studying in Canada currently reaches 642,480 people. Most of them are students from Asia, including Indonesia. According to IRCC 2018 statistics, over 50% of international students come from two countries, India (30%) and China (25%). The other countries are South Korea with 24,195 students and Vietnam with 20,330 people.

“For Indonesia, there are also about 20,000 students and university students in Canada spread across several cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. These students, along with all international immigrants to Canada, are considered a source of social economy for the Canadian government. They can be a source of development there. Thus, the diaspora under construction is indeed very strategic because it is prepared for the next 50 years, ”said Leonard.

Economic cooperation and tourism

In addition to increasing cooperation in the education sector, the Indonesian government also continues to increase cooperation in the economic and tourism fields with Canada. Obviously, Canadian investment in Indonesia has also increased.

“In fact, during this pandemic, the number of Canadian investments in Indonesia increased from 120 projects in 2019 to 255 projects in 2020. This shows that Canada has great confidence in Indonesia as a country with great potential. Likewise, exports to Canada have increased, including East Java crab exports, ”Leonardo said.

In addition to the economy, the tourism sector also grew sharply before the Covid-19 pandemic. The recorded number of Canadian tourists to Indonesia has reached 104,000 people. This number has increased from Canadian tourist visits in 2018, which were 90,000 tourists.

Interestingly, Canadian tourists are different from other tourists. While tourists typically only spend three days to a week in Indonesia, Indonesian tourists may linger.

“They stay at least two weeks in Indonesia, even up to two months. Thus, the exchange value is larger. The increase was also supported by the promotion of Indonesian culture in Canada. In fact, in 2020 we had a cultural festival planned, but it was only delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, “Leonardo said.
