As one of Canada’s leading technology hubs, Markham continues to be at the forefront of innovation.
GM Canada’s Canadian Technical Center (CTC) in Markham was the site of a recent announcement regarding the province’s latest pledge to put Ontario at the forefront of global demand for cleaner transportation solutions, safer and more durable.
Conducted in partnership with the Ontario Innovation Center (OCI), the government’s $ 56.4 million investment in the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) was announced by the Minister of Economic Development , Job Creation and Trade, Vic Fedeli, December 2.

The Future of Ontario’s Auto Sector, The Government’s Plan to Secure Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Production Agreements and Mandates, Create a National Battery Ecosystem, and Strengthen Ontario’s Position as a North American innovation hub for automobiles and electric vehicles (EVs).
“Together, OVIN and Driving Prosperity Phase 2 will help the province’s auto parts producers, workers and national innovators meet the global demand for electric and autonomous vehicles, as well as related technologies and infrastructure,” said Fedeli.
“Right now, across our province, more than 300 companies are already working to invent the future of clean and connected transportation. Through OVIN, we continue to invest in Ontario’s innovation ecosystem, ensuring our innovators, entrepreneurs and SMEs have the capital and support they need to deliver to the world EV and CAV solutions made in Ontario.
Transport Minister Caroline Mulroney said the flagship program will go a long way in supporting the region’s talented workforce, boosting research and development of electric vehicles, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions .
“Ontario’s wheels are moving to create a more sustainable future for the transportation sector,” she said. “A key pillar of our plan is to strengthen Ontario’s position as a hub for the production of electric vehicles, making these vehicles more accessible to drivers across the province.
Combined with the province’s $ 85 million investment in the former Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN), Ontario’s total investment in this flagship initiative is close to $ 142 million. .
