Gael Monfils turns back the years to shock Stefanos Tsitsipas in Canada

by Horace Rogers

Veteran Gael Monfils overpowered Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto.

The flamboyant former Top 10 star has struggled with injuries over the past year and has fallen to 276th but showed he still has the skills with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Tsitsipas to embarrass the very best.

The Greek, who won a title in Mexico last weekend, made many mistakes, particularly on his forehand wing, but Monfils, who was three weeks away from his 37th birthday, excelled in defense and attack.

Meanwhile, home favorite Milos Raonic continued his resurgence and, after his upset against Frances Tiafoe, defeated qualifier Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-3.

The former Wimbledon finalist did not compete between July 2021 and this June due to injuries and is unsure about the future but he has notched up two consecutive wins at the Canadian Masters event for the first time in seven years.

Next he meets American Mackenzie McDonald, who defeated sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3, while second-seeded Daniil Medvedev is safe after beating Matteo Arnaldi 6-2-7-5.
