NEW YORK (AP) — “Avatar: The Way of Water” is box office king for a third week in a row and shows no signs of slowing down.
James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to the first ‘Avatar’ film grossed an estimated $63 million over the holiday weekend, about the same as the week before, and has now grossed over $400 million in country and more than $1.3 billion worldwide. “The Way of Water” is already the 15th highest worldwide release of all time, second only to the first “Black Panther”.
Figures released by Comscore on Sunday showed ‘Avatar’ far ahead of second-placed Universal’s ‘Shrek’ spin-off ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, which grossed around $16 million, and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. from Disney, which grossed around $4.8 million.
Sony’s biopic “Whitney Houston: I Want to Dance With Someone” grossed $4.2 million in its second week of release. “Babylon,” the early Hollywood epic starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, has continued to perform poorly despite its five Golden Globe nominations. The Paramount version only grossed $2.7 million in its second week, down 24%, and averaged just $815 per slot. By comparison, the new “Avatar,” a film from 20th century studios, averaged over $15,000.
