Football Canada appoints Peter Baxter to Board of Directors

by Horace Rogers

“I want to help continue this progress by developing a bold strategic plan for the future of our sport with the full involvement of all stakeholders from across Canada.”

Baxter served as Laurier’s director of athletics and recreation for more than 23 years before retiring in 2022. During his tenure, the school won 45 national championships in Ontario University athletics and 10 in U Sports.

“We are very fortunate to have one of Canada’s most respected and successful sporting directors lend his experience and leadership skills to Football Canada,” said Jim Mullin, President of Football Canada. “He is the type of personality we need at the board level as we build on a new foundation focused on growth.”

Kevin McDonald, executive director of Football Canada and a graduate of Laurier University, knows Baxter’s accomplishments firsthand.

“Peter’s ability to build relationships, coupled with his experience from an impressive career in college sports (including extensive work in football), allows us to move forward with a compassionate, experienced leader who will greatly contribute to the dynamic at the board table,” McDonald said. “He will also provide strong support and leadership to the national office and our members.”

Baxter also served as OUA President and Vice President of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sports). He was OUA soccer organizer for 16 years and chair of Football Canada’s Rules Committee.

Swim Ontario awarded Baxter the 2010 Omni Friend of Swimming award. He was also selected as the Chef de Mission for Canada at two World University Games (2009 winter event in Harbin, China; 2011 summer competition in Shenzhen, China).

“With the inclusion of the flag at the 28th Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Football Canada has a tremendous opportunity to showcase and grow our sport,” said Baxter.

“Football Canada’s leadership is committed to taking soccer in Canada to new heights.”
