Governor Flávio Dino received, this Tuesday (28), at the Palácio dos Leões, the courtesy visit of the Ambassador of Canada to Brazil, Jennifer May, as part of the official agenda of the Canadian delegation in São Luís, the first Brazilian city to be visited by the Canadian Embassy since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the meeting, partnerships between the governments of Canada and Maranhão were discussed in areas such as environment, social development and trade. The purpose of the visit, according to the Canadian ambassador, is to further strengthen ties between the government of Maranhão and the North American country.

“It was a very nice conversation. I learned a lot about the situation in the state of Maranhão, but we also talked about social, environmental and, of course, commercial priorities, and how we can strengthen the ties between Maranhão and Canada ”, explained the diplomat.

In the company of the Secretary of State for Culture, Anderson Lindoso, Governor Flávio Dino presented to the Canadian delegation the charms of the collection on display at the Palácio dos Leões, cultural facility of the government of Maranhão.

Canada not Brazil

With many aspects in common with Brazil – both have vast territories and a great multiplicity of natural resources and ecosystems, for example – Canada has a strong presence on Brazilian soil.

In addition to the Embassy in Brasilia, the Government of Canada has Consulates General in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and trade offices in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Recife.

Visit in 2018

This is not the first time that representatives of the Canadian government have visited the Maranhão. In 2018, representatives of the Canadian Consulate in Brazil were in São Luís to learn about the structure and health services offered by the Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital of Maranhão (HTO).

At the time, the diplomatic mission was surprised by the HTO’s facilities. “I found it to be well organized, with excellent service and cleanliness,” said Canadian representative Janice Mills.
