According to Salim Valji from TSN On Thursday, the Calgary Flames signed defenseman Tyson Barrie from Victoria, British Columbia. The contract term is one year and $1.25 million.

Barrie joins its fifth National Hockey League franchise. He previously played eight seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 2011 to 2019, one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019 to 2020, three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers from 2020 to 2023 and two seasons with the Nashville Predators from 2023 to 2024.

Last season, Barrie recorded one goal and 14 assists for 15 points in 41 games. He was a -10 with 16 penalty minutes, six power play points, 65 shots on goal, 47 blocked shots, 14 hits, five takeaways and 18 giveaways.

Barrie’s only goal last season came on December 15th. He scored against Philip Tomasino of Mississauga, Ont., and Cole Smith in the Predators’ 6-5 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Barrie’s goal came at 10:18 of the second period, bringing the Predators within one goal at that point, making Carolina 5-4.

A strength of Barrie’s game is the power play. He is an elite defender because he is great at keeping the puck in the zone. Expectations for the Flames aren’t very high this season, but one notable person I spoke to from the Calgary hockey community last week guaranteed me that the Flames will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season would.
