by Rex Daniel

TORONTO – Five things to watch out for in Canadian business over the coming week:

railroad earnings

This week the results of the second quarter come from the country’s main railway companies. Canadian National Railway Co. will report its second-quarter results after the close on Tuesday, while Canadian Pacific Kansas City will report its results after the close on Thursday.

Rogers results

Rogers Communications Inc. will announce its second quarter results before the markets open on Wednesday. The company is working to integrate Shaw Communications into its operations after completing its purchase agreement for the company in April.

Loblaw Results

Loblaw Companies Ltd. will announce its results on Wednesday before the start of trading. A report by the Competition Bureau last month said Canada’s grocery sector needs more competition to keep grocery prices down, give shoppers more choice and encourage new entrants.

Teck results

Teck Resources Ltd. will announce its second quarter results before the markets open on Thursday. The Vancouver-based mining company announced last month that it had received several “unsolicited expressions of interest” in its steel coal business, including an offer from Glencore.

GDP report

Statistics Canada is due to release its May gross domestic product figures and June flash estimate on Friday. The agency’s preliminary estimate for May showed growth of 0.4 percent this month, led by manufacturing and wholesale trade and real estate agent and brokerage offices.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on July 23, 2023.
