REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Tennis player Emma Raducanu has been chosen as the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. This is an annual award given to those involved in the sport in the UK as recognition of Raducanu’s outstanding victory at the US Open.

Raducanu stunned the sports world in September 2021 when he became the first qualifier to win a major tournament after beating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final at Flushing Meadows. The 19-year-old also became the first British woman to win a major title since Virginia Wade won at Wimbledon in 1977.

Raducanu beat a number of nominated athletes including diver Tom Daley, who came second and swimmer Adam Peaty in third, as well as boxer Tyson Fury, footballer Raheem Sterling and cyclist Sarah Storey to win the award.

“It’s an honor to be among these nominees. Winning is amazing,” said Raducanu, who also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this year on his Grand Slam debut. Reuters, Monday (20/12). “This year playing Wimbledon in front of a local crowd is something I have never felt before.”

Raducanu has seen the Sports Personality of the Year grow and it is an honor to be among the previous winners. “I am also happy for British tennis and we managed to get this award again.”

Briton Andy Murray was the last tennis player to win the award in 2016 after winning the trophy in 2015 and 2013. Skateboarder Sky Brown took home the Sports Personality of the Year award after the 13-year-old won Olympic bronze for Great Britain in the women’s park skateboard final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
