“We have learned a lot by tackling social issues and living on closed platforms, now is the time to take what we have learned and help build the next chapter,” said the founder and CEO of the company, Mark Zuckerberg, at an annual developer conference.

“Our apps and their brands are not going to change,” he added. In this way, the social network will remain like Facebook, changing only the name of the company.

According to the website The Verge, the name change is part of an effort by the company to change its image from only specializing in social media to broaden attention. In an interview with the outlet in July, company founder Mark Zuckerberg put part of the plan forward.

The idea is that over the next several years, Facebook “actually succeeds in transforming from a business that people see primarily as social media to a” metaverse “business,” according to Zuckerberg. To achieve this, the company will expand its investments in new technologies such as virtual reality for example.
