Meteorologists warn that strong winds and heavy rain could hit parts of the British Columbia coast starting Sunday night during the first storm of the fall season.
Environment Canada has issued one Wind warning for the coastal areas of Vancouver Island, including Greater Victoria, and much of the central coast of the province up to the northern part of the Sunshine Coast, including Powell River.
According to the weather agency, some areas could see wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour by Monday evening, while other locations, including Greater Victoria, could see winds of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour.
The alert warns that strong winds are also expected in the Vancouver metropolitan area and fall foliage may make trees more susceptible to breakage, increasing the risk of power outages in B.C
Meanwhile, Environment Canada has also issued a rainfall warning for the Howe Sound region, predicting up to 65 millimeters of rain and wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour.
The weather agency said more than 100 millimeters of rain could fall in parts of western Vancouver Island by early Tuesday and that most of the province should expect cloudy skies and showers for the rest of the week.
Recent cool, wet weather has helped emergency crews bring a number of wildfires under control in British Columbia, such as the Glen Lake fire near Peachland. However, officials said extended periods of heavy rainfall will be needed to ease drought conditions in the province.
