Entertainment Tonight Canada is ending its broadcast after nearly two decades.
Corus Entertainment announced the discontinuation of the daily entertainment show on Wednesday afternoon.
“The costs of producing a daily entertainment newsmagazine in a demanding advertising environment have led to this decision. We recognize the impact this decision will have on the dedicated team that worked on the show and thank them for their significant contributions over the years,” Corus said in a press release.
Corus is the parent company of ET Canada and Global News.
As a result of the end of the show, the entire ET Canada team will be laid off, according to a Corus spokesperson.
“The end of production of Entertainment Tonight Canada will result in the exit of the entire team, including the hosts, and we thank everyone for their time working on the show. We cannot provide any further comment or details on personnel matters,” the spokesperson said in a statement to Now Toronto.
ET Canada’s website and social media platforms will also be shut down, the spokesperson said. Corus added that there are no plans for future entertainment shows.
ET Canada host Cheryl Hickey responded to the news in her Instagram story, saying, “I’m heartbroken for our team.”
“I love these people, past and present team/family members. So today I’m going to sit down and look back at moments that fill my heart with joy and laughter and that will always hold a special place in my heart. We have 7 more shows to go and I’ll have more to share in the next few days,” she added.
First aired in 2005, the hour-long show focuses on entertainment and cultural news and airs every weekday at 7:30 p.m. EST on Global TV.
The final episode of ET Canada will air on October 6. In the same time slot, a series of repeat specials of Entertainment Tonight Canada will air on Global through October 31.
