The CEO is EspaceX, Elon musk, announced a new step for the space company: a withdrawal programcarbon dioxide of the atmosphere and transform it into rocket fuel. On Twitter, the billionaire posted a message adding that this technology will be important so that it is finally possible to bring humanity to Mars.
As of yet, there are no predictions when the space company’s plans will be implemented. Musk also didn’t reveal how his company intended to complete this whole process.
How it works to capture carbon
Carbon capture is a method used by governments to reduce gas emissions. This technology allows the chemical compound to be removed by air, using large fans and underground storage, in basalt rock, where it can be mineralized.
One of the largest such equipment in the world is the Orca factory, a large-scale capture site in Iceland. The estimate is that four thousand tonnes of carbon are removed from the air each year.
Another possibility for this capture is based on scientific processes, such as that used by the Canadian company Carbon Engineering, which produces liquid fuel from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and by combining it with hydrogen in water.
NASA has also developed a way to turn carbon dioxide into fuel, using fine metal oxide devices that turn the compound into fuel before it is emitted into the atmosphere. It can be used in industrial processes, converting carbon dioxide into fuel such as methane, according to the agency.
