Tonight, director Atom Egoyan will premiere his film Seven Veils in a unique collaboration with the Canadian Opera Company and the Toronto International Film Festival.

The special “avant premiere” will be held at the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto, and the official TIFF screening will be held at the Princess of Wales Theater on Sunday.

“Seven Veils,” starring Amanda Seyfried, tells the story of a theater director whose world is thrown out of joint when she reworks a production of “Salome” after the death of her mentor who previously directed it.

Egoyan directed “Salome” for the Canadian Opera Company in 1996. It depicts the beheading of John the Baptist at the behest of the Jewish Princess Salome.

Egoyan said the work contains deeply personal themes about hidden wounds that were also a staple in several of his early works.

However, due to an ongoing strike by members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio, Seyfried will not be walking the red carpet.

The US actress said in a social media post that while “Seven Veils” received a “waiver” from the US Actors’ Union, it “doesn’t feel right” to promote it to TIFF during the strike.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 8, 2023.
