The long awaited premiere of the movie “Dune” (Dune: Part Dune) has finally arrived. Movie theaters across Mexico are already announcing the most ambitious project in director Denis Villeneuve’s career. This Canadian filmmaker is the author of other very good science fiction films: “The Arrival” (2016) and “Blade Runner 2049” (2017).
This is the second film adaptation of the novel “Dune” (Dune), written by the American Frank Herbert, published in 1965. It is a science fiction story, Herbert’s book, first part of a saga of 5, is one of the bestsellers of its kind.
In the 1980s, the first of the film versions of this work arrived. The one in charge of directing it was the legendary and brilliant director David Lynch, this in 1984. But, before, in the 70s, the mythical Alejandro Jodorowsky, had in mind the hopeful idea of bringing this science to the cinema- fiction and fantasy story that is “Dune”.
In 2013, the documentary “La Dune de Jodorowsky” was released, directed by Franck Pavich. It is a testament to what has long been a myth. The director, magician, poet, Jodorowsky, proposed a great production, with figures such as Dalí, Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, among other figures in his cast, in addition to the intervention of Pink Floyd in the musical production. .
The proposal of the Chilean mystic never materialized. The one chosen to make the first release, David Lynch, created “Dunas” in 1984. It was a resounding failure at the box office; it had a terrible reception by the critics. But later it became a cult movie. It is, without a doubt, one of the film references of science fiction.
Lynch’s “Dunas” has a broad connection to Mexico, it was shot in its entirety in different locations across our country. The Churubusco Studios forums in Mexico City have long hosted film sets. Even an Albumin film was shot on the sets that “Dunas” left in Churubusco, “Two nacos on the planet of women”, with performances by Alberto “horse” Rojas, César Bono and Lorena Herrera.
For desert landscapes and natural spaces, the shooting was carried out in places such as the Gran Desierto de Altar in Sonora; Puerto Peñasco and Sierra Pinacate, also in Sonora. In addition to Samalayuca, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.
Lynch’s version is a masterpiece of cinema. Of course, it is sassy to put aspects like special effects or visual effects to the test. The musical proposal is masterful, the work of the group “Toto” and the genius Brian Eno.
I have already had the opportunity to see “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve, it’s a great audiovisual show. It is a masterpiece of technology applied to cinema. A special mention deserves the music of Hans Zimmer. Without a doubt, a highly recommended film.
