Tennis News: Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov has had a 2021 roller coaster season and now has some unpleasant news for his fans in Paris.
After the 22-year-old reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his Wimbledon career, he is still looking forward to winning his first ATP tournament title this season. Now he has announced that he will not participate in the Masters 1000 tournament, the Paris Masters.
Last season, the Paris Masters were held in an empty stadium after supporters were not allowed to enter the stadium due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the 2019 season, the Canadian captured the hearts of fans in France with a breathtaking race to the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris. So it’s a shame that fans in France aren’t watching the Canadiens for the second year in a row.
Currently, Shapovalov is competing at the St. Petersburg Open and has qualified for the quarterfinals. The tournament’s second seed will face Germany’s Jan Lennard Struff.
The Canadian tennis player’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Masters has certainly surprised many fans. However, the reason for the resignation is still unknown.
The most likely reason for the world number 13’s resignation is fatigue after a long 2021 season. According to ATPTour.com, he is currently in his 30th tournament of the season.
The place left by Shapovalov at the Paris Masters has been replaced by the American Mackenzie McDonald. Fans are hoping the Canadian can take it further at St. Petersburg’s Open. Without a doubt, his toughest opponent in the tournament is host and seed Andrey Rublev.
Without the St. Petersburg Open, this season Shapovalov recorded 26-21, notably being a finalist at the Geneva Open.
Apart from Shapovalov, Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori will not participate in the Paris Masters either. He hadn’t competed since the Indian Wells tournament. His career has been marred by a series of injuries and he will now miss one of the most prestigious tournaments.
Earlier, upon news of Nishikori’s withdrawal from the Vienna Open, he tweeted that his next tournament would be the Paris Masters. The situation must have changed after he decided not to compete in Paris.
The place left by Nishikori will be taken by world number 51 James Duckworth, who recently lost in the first round of St. Petersburg Open.
