Rostock (dpa) – The large-scale maritime maneuver “Northern Coasts” begins under German leadership in the Baltic Sea next weekend. The maneuver is a German navy exercise and aims to strengthen cooperation between countries in the Baltic Sea region, a Bundeswehr spokesman announced on Thursday. Since 2007, a different country has been responsible for the series of exercises each year.
From September 9, around 3,200 soldiers from 14 countries will take part in the two-week exercise, including Italy, France, Canada and the United States. Around 30 ships, submarines, up to 15 aircraft and various land units will train together.
According to the information, the exercise area mainly includes the coastal waters and the land and air space of Estonia and Latvia as well as the eastern and central part of the Baltic Sea.
“Exercise, presence and constant vigilance – together with our NATO and EU partners” are important for the protection of the country and its people, said Jan Christian Kaack, inspector of the navy and vice admiral. Tactical procedures will be practiced in coastal waters. The aim is for different systems, teams and countries to work together as harmoniously as possible. For the first time, a realistic scenario of defending a country and alliances will also be put into practice.
