Canadian quantum computing company D-Wave Systems announced on Thursday that it has deployed its latest quantum computer at the University of Southern California.
D-Wave’s most powerful machine, called the Advantage System, launched in September 2020 and works in Canada and Germany, said Murray Thom, vice president of product management at D-Wave.
American researchers and companies have been able to access the system online, but the rollout will place a physical machine in the United States and comes as Washington ramps up support for quantum technology, he said.
The Advantage system has over 5000 qubits, or quantum bits, an indication of the power of the quantum computer. In the future, quantum computers should be able to run millions of times faster than today’s advanced supercomputers.
D-Wave, founded in 1999, said in February it would go public by merging with blank check company DPCM Capital in a deal that values the combined company at nearly $1.6 billion.
