Cristiano Ronaldo has come under fire after the Manchester United striker posted a photo of himself alongside right-wing psychologist Jordan Peterson on Instagram.
Peterson has become a divisive figure in recent years due to his controversial views on transgender people, Covid-19 vaccinations and masculinity.
In 2017, Peterson was suspended from Twitter after naming and misrepresenting actor Elliot Page.
He tweeted: ‘Remember when Pride was a sin? And [Elliot Page] just had [his] breasts removed by criminal doctor.
Peterson received backlash for his comments about Page, who came out as transgender three years later.
Peterson also caused a stir last year when he claimed ‘you should kill me first’ to get him given a Covid-19 vaccination booster.
The psychologist confirmed he had been vaccinated against Covid-19, but made the remark after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on people to get stronger as infection rates rose in the country in last December.

During his rise to fame, Peterson described himself as a “teacher against political correctness”, and he was particularly outspoken about masculinity.
The 60-year-old has previously said ‘the male spirit is under attack’ and claimed ‘the idea that women have been oppressed throughout history is an appalling theory’.
Those views don’t seem to have bothered Ronaldo, as the Portuguese footballer posed for a photo with Peterson on Saturday.
With his arm around Peterson’s shoulder, Ronaldo captioned the photo: “Nice to see you my friend!” #see you soon.’
A number of fans were left disappointed by Ronaldo’s decision to take a photo with Peterson.
“Really tarnishing his legacy here,” one supporter wrote on Twitter.

It’s also been pointed out that this photo could now lead to Peterson getting even more attention, as a fan lashed out at Ronaldo for ‘getting it’.
“Imagine how many impressionable young men are spending tonight watching Jordan Peterson videos now,” one fan wrote.
“Why is anyone even mildly surprised that someone as authoritative as him thinks Peterson is awesome?” asked another fan.
