Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – China denounced the words of the Prime Minister of Canada Justin trudeau as a very unreasonable and arrogant expression, when Beijing intervened to prevent the extradition of the executives of Huawei Technologies Co. to the United States.
The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa has expressed its outrage and harshest condemnation, protesting Trudeau’s criticism of the 11-year prison sentence of Canadian citizen Michael Spavor. Trudeau condemned Spavor’s trial decision, which he said was politically charged.
The embassy also rejected allegations that the prosecution of Spavor and fellow Canadian Michael Kovrig was arbitrary detention intended to pressure Ottawa to block the extradition of Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou. The Chinese government views the case as a politically motivated attack on one of its major tech companies.
“There is no” arbitrary detention “at all. On the contrary, the Canadian side, ignoring the political nature of the Meng Wanzhou incident and acting as an accomplice of the American side, detained Meng, an innocent Chinese citizen and did not violate any Canadian law once for almost 1,000 days. This is arbitrary detention in all respects, “the embassy said in a statement. Bloomberg, Thursday (12/8/2021).
A spokesperson for the embassy China in Washington also criticized the United States for making reckless and irresponsible comments about Spavor’s case. He urged US authorities to unconditionally revoke Meng’s extradition.
Spavor and Kovrig were arrested by China’s main spy agency in December 2018, days after Meng’s arrest in Vancouver, and the government pushed their prosecutions forward alongside the fight for Meng’s extradition.
Spavor’s verdict comes just as Meng’s defense begins a final push to prevent her from being sent to the United States to face fraud charges. The timing of Kovrig’s verdict remains uncertain.
Diplomats from 25 countries, including Japan, Germany and Britain, gathered at the Canadian Embassy ahead of Spavor’s verdict. This gesture showed Beijing that all eyes in the world were watching.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also issued a statement condemning the use of arbitrary detention to exert diplomatic influence.
“People shouldn’t be used as a negotiating tool,” Blinken said.
Embassy China rejected displays of diplomatic solidarity with Canada as a diplomatic effort by a handful of diplomats from Western countries. “It’s a total waste of time,” he said.
