CBC Vancouver’s evening news program was the big winner at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on May 28.
The show was named Best Local Newscast during Canadian Screen Week, which celebrates the work of Canada’s film, television and digital industries.
News at 6 presenter Anita Bathe accepted the award on Tuesday on behalf of the team.
“I am so proud of how hard our team works every day to put on our show,” she said. “We are a small but mighty group and I couldn’t ask for more talented colleagues.”
“We really understand how important it is to give a voice to communities across the province. Local news matters, period.”
Bathe was named Best Local News Anchor in both 2022 and 2023.
Producer Matthew McFarlane said the award was not just a win for the show, but for the entire province.
“It’s the diversity of the team and this newsroom that I’m so proud of – and that’s reflected in the kind of stories we tell and the voices we broadcast every day,” he said.
“This is not just a win for the show, it’s a win for the entire CBC BC team and all the areas of this province that we cover.”
CBC’s news division was nominated in 22 categories Tuesday night. It is nominated in several other categories to be announced throughout the week.
The hour-long Canadian Screen Awards gala, hosted by Mae Martin, can be viewed on CBC TV and CBC Gem on Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. ET.
CBC British Columbia photographer Ben Nelms also recently won first place in the Photo of the Year, Picture Story: News and Breaking News categories in the News Photographers Association of Canada’s National Pictures of the Year competition.
