Wildfires in both Quebec and British Columbia have resulted in a “double whammy” that has resulted in very unhealthy air quality in the Wheeling area, according to Pittsburgh’s National Weather Service.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, a permanent air quality sensor in Moundsville recorded the region’s air quality index at 208, according to the federal government’s AirNow website. This keeps air quality in the region at a “very unhealthy” level. Therefore, all people should limit outdoor physical activity, and those in vulnerable groups — the elderly, young children, and those with heart or respiratory problems — should avoid outdoor activities altogether.
Lee Hendricks, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said air quality should improve into the “unhealthy” range by tonight, but significant improvements won’t come until late Friday and early Saturday.
