A teacher in Quebec, Canada, was transferred for wearing a headscarf.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTTAWA — The province of Quebec, Canada, banned the use of religious symbols by a public official after a law was passed in 2019. The law saw a teacher wearing the hijab.
“A Grade 3 teacher in Chelsea, Quebec, has been moved to a different position under Quebec law that prohibits public sector employees in positions of authority from wearing religious symbols,” said Wayne Daly, president. of the West Quebec School Board. Reuters, city of Abna24, Monday (13/12).
He has been inundated with phone calls and emails since his statement. A 3rd grader even denounced the transfer as unfair.
The predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec enacted the law in 2019, ostensibly to maintain the “secularism” of secularism in its public services.
The bill, which was partially upheld by a Quebec court this spring, has been criticized for targeting Muslims, Sikhs and Jews. Federal party leaders demanded an apology during the September federal election debate after moderators called it discriminatory.
