Shortly after news of Matt’s death broke, Justin, who knew Matt as a boy when the actor’s mother worked as his father Pierre Trudeau’s assistant, took the time to honor the talented star in a sweet message.
The Canadian Prime Minister wrote: “Matthew Perry’s death is shocking and sad.”
“I will never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world will never forget the joy he brought them.”
Then he said a poignant goodbye, saying, “Thanks for all the laughter, Matthew. You were loved – and we will miss you.”
The unlikely duo went to school together, and even though Matt was “a few years ahead of him,” they seemed to have met in a pretty strange way that Matt said he wasn’t “proud of.”
While speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2017, Matt Jimmy revealed, “My friend Chris Murray reminded me that we actually beat up Justin Trudeau.”
Matt, who was in fifth grade at the time, continued: “We both beat him up. I think he excelled at a sport we didn’t master, so it was pure jealousy. So we beat him up.”
The actor stressed: “I’m not bragging about this, this is terrible. I was a stupid boy,” adding playfully, “I think at some point I tried to make it into a love game.”
At the time, Justin also expressed humor about the childhood experience.
He tweeted: “I thought about it and guess what, who didn’t want to hit Chandler?”
“How about a rematch against Matthew Perry?” Justin continued:
Since Matt’s tragic death dominated headlines around the world, tributes have been pouring in from his famous friends and family around the world.
