Canadian national team midfielder Tajon Buchanan was taken away by ambulance on Tuesday after sustaining a shin injury during training ahead of his team’s quarter-final match at the Copa America.
Canadian defender Alistair Johnston told TSN the injury occurred after players “collided” during a practice. Johnston said Buchanan’s injury was immediately audible. The ambulance arrived at the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium on the campus of Texas Christian University shortly after 10 a.m.
Practice was cancelled after the ambulance arrived. As the Canadian players quietly left the field, Johnston described the mood among the team as “gloomy.”
Buchanan, who plays for Serie A club Inter Milan, started one of Canada’s three group stage matches and came on twice as a substitute. The club has been informed of the injury.
“Tajon Buchanan sustained a lower leg injury during today’s training,” Canada Soccer said in a press release Tuesday afternoon. “He was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
Canada will face Venezuela in the quarterfinals on Friday night in Arlington, Texas.
