Canadian Critical Care Week – Dr. Perry Gray in the spotlight

by Naomi Parham

Canadian Critical Care Week

It takes a special kind of person to care for others and selflessly recognize and meet the needs of the sick and injured.

Across Manitoba, teams of healthcare professionals demonstrate these special qualities every day and live the values of compassion and empathy in impressive ways.

Each year, more than 100,000 Canadians benefit from the life-saving care provided by multidisciplinary teams working in intensive care units. Dedicated doctors, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and other health and support professionals are on site every shift to carry out this fulfilling but very challenging work.

This week, during Canadian Intensive Care Week, we recognize the members of our critical care teams who help patients recover from serious injuries and/or illness.

Dr. Perry Gray in the spotlight

Dr. Perry Gray has been a cornerstone of Manitoba’s healthcare system for more than 30 years and recently announced his intention not to seek a re-term as chief medical officer and chief provincial medical specialist at Shared Health.

His time as an intensive care physician is now entering its fourth decade. He spent most of that time in the HSC’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and in recent years he supported care in the facility’s Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU).

Just as there are countless stories highlighting Perry Gray’s impact on patients, families and healthcare providers, particularly those who have passed through the highly specialized areas of HSC Winnipeg, there are also stories and fond memories among colleagues past and present.

Check back here in the coming days as we share some of them.
