Canadian Cookie Monsters raise $19.7 million for charity

by Naomi Parham

The annual Smile Cookie campaign at Tim Hortons raised a record-breaking $19.7 million to support more than 600 charities and community groups across Canada and the United States.

“It takes millions and millions of Smile cookies to be baked and hand-decorated in just a week to achieve such an amazing result. My heartfelt thanks to all members of the Tim Hortons family who made this possible, to all of our passionate restaurateurs and team members, and to the volunteers who helped us puncture eyes and smile,” said Company President Axel Schwan in a press release.

The first campaign in 1996 raised funds in support of Hamilton Children’s Hospital. Since then, the annual charity campaign has collectively raised more than $111 million for charities chosen by individual restaurant owners each year. Recipients include local hospitals, community care organizations, food banks and schools.

In Greater Victoria, 23 Tim Hortons restaurants raised funds for the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island to support Jeneece Place, a home away from home adjacent to Victoria General Hospital, as part of the week-long campaign that ended May 7.

A store in Dunnville, Ontario sold the most Smile cookies this year – nearly 52,000, which equates to almost nine cookies for every resident.
