by Horace Rogers

After the first round, Canadian Adam Hadwin leads the Memorial Tournament, closely followed by world number one Scottie Scheffler and the winner of the US PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele.

Hadwin shot 66, six under par, with eight birdies and two bogeys, including one on the final hole, while Scheffler was one stroke behind with six birdies and a bogey.

Schauffele is one stroke behind Scheffler and shares third place with Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, Canada’s Corey Connors and America’s Collin Morikawa.

The world number two said his putting kept him at the right end of the rankings.

“When the ball was in the air, I closed my eyes,” Schauffele said. “I wouldn’t call myself religious, but I hoped everything would go well.”

“If I hadn’t made some of the necessary putts today, it probably would have been two over par or worse.”

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy had an up-and-down day, salvaging his first-round score with four birdies in the final six holes after shooting two bogeys and a costly double bogey on the 12th to leave him four shots behind the leader.

EnglandTommy Fleetwood is one stroke ahead of McIlroy after a more consistent round with four birdies and a bogey.
