Canada’s Zhao advances to third round of Wimbledon qualifiers with a win over Rus

LONDON — Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ontario, is one step closer to qualifying for the first Grand Slam main draw of her career with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in the second round over Ontario’s Arantxa Rus come Netherlands in the Wimbledon qualifier on Wednesday.

Zhao hit 80 percent of her first serves and won 67 percent of the available points. She was also effective on the second serve, winning 75 percent of those points.

The Canadian beat No. 2 qualifier Rus four times in eight chances.

Zhao meets American veteran CoCo Vandeweghe for a spot in the main draw of the Grand Slam on grass on Thursday.

She will be the only Canadian playing for a spot in the main draw on Thursday. Toronto’s Katherine Sebov lost 6-0, 3-6 to Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova in the second round of the women’s qualifier, while Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo lost 6-4, 6-4 to Italy’s Matteo Gigante in the second round of the men’s tournament .
