According to an unofficial poll, Canada’s rudest and politest cities are both in Ontario.
Preply, an online tutoring platform, surveyed just over 1,500 Canadian residents in 44 cities who had lived there for at least a year.
In the unofficial survey, participants were asked, based on 26 categories, how often they noticed disrespectful behavior in their place of residence. This was then converted to the city’s average “rudeness” score of 10.
According to the unofficial poll, two of Canada’s top three rudest cities, Vaughan, Ontario, are in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Winner with an 8.05 and Brampton, Ontario. ended up third with a score of 7.05. The average score for “rudeness,” according to Preply, is 5.22.
Vaughan ranked high because many people in public are too engrossed in their phones to wave appreciatively when another driver pulls them into lane.
Other Ontario cities that rank among the rudest include Windsor at number five, Thunder Bay at number six, and Sudbury at number ninth.
While GTA ranks high for hosting some of Canada’s rudest cities, it also earns the title of the country’s most polite city.
Markham, Ontario. is considered the most polite with a score of 2.91, which according to the unofficial poll could be due to its cultural diversity. Chatham-Kent, St Catharines, Oakville, Kingston and London also made the good list.
Preply also considered which Canadian cities are most prone to swearing and apologizing, and Burlington takes first place in both categories.
Here’s how GTA cities scored:
- Vaughan, 8.05
- Brampton, 7.05
- Toronto, 5.91
- Mississauga, 5.25
- Richmond Hill, 4.89
- Burlington, 4.76
- Oshawa, 4.73
- Oakville, 4.46
