Team Canada will not participate in the Spengler Cup due to the pandemic, it says in a statement on the official website of the Ice Hockey Federation of Canada.
“After careful consideration and discussion with our Chief Medical Officer of the ever-evolving pandemic situation, the Ice Hockey Federation of Canada made the difficult decision to withdraw from the 2021 Spengler Cup in Davos. We have a long tradition of participating in the Spengler Cup and we are very disappointed not to be able to attend this prestigious event this year, ”the statement said.
The Spengler Cup will take place from December 26 to 31 in Davos. The Canadian team will be replaced by Slovan Bratislava. It is also planned to participate in the tournament of Swedish “Frelunda”, Finnish “KalPa”, Swiss “Davos” and Czech “Sparta”.
Team Canada, which included players from European clubs, has won the tournament 16 times. The Spengler Cup has been held since 1923 and is considered the oldest tournament in ice hockey. In 2020, it did not take place due to the pandemic.
In December, the Canadian team competed in the Channel One Cup in Moscow, where they claimed a victory in three games.
